Andy Warhol, born 1928 in Pennsylvania as Andrew Warhola, is considered the father of the pop art movement and is regarded as one of the most influential cultural icons of the century. Warhol was born into a working-class neighborhood, the son of immigrant parents from Eastern Slovakia. Warhol's parents bought him his first camera at the age of eight despite their limited resources. Warhol studied at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in 1945. After graduating, Warhol moved to New York and created an iconic persona for himself. Warhol began his career working as a commercial illustrator. Warhol came into prominence in the early 1960s, when he turned his attention to the Pop Art Movement, with work that explored America's fascination with celebrity culture and consumerism. Warhol appropriated images using his signature silkscreen printing technique and created pivotal works, such as Coca Cola (1961), Campbell's Soup Cans (1962), and Marilyn Diptych (1962). Warhol would host parties at his silver toned ‘factory’ studio in New York, fostering a culture of experimentation and liberation. Throughout his career, warhol collaborated with artists Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente, adn Keith Haring. His untimely death was due to a medical complication during surgery in February of 1987. Since his passing, Warhol's work has become exponentially more valuable and recognizable across the globe.
